Some of our neighbors have formed a produce co-op. It works not with produce everyone grows from their lush, abundantly producing gardens, but with produce selected from a wholesaler in Salt Lake City who delivers the bulk order every other week to Erinn (my nice neighbor who arranges all this). Erinn then divides the order as equally as possible and then sends out a text for all of us to come pick up our produce. Erinn took input from everyone at the start of this co-op and uses that information when she chooses the produce from what is available that week. The cost is set at $17.00 with everyone contributing an additional one-time, non-refundable, $17.00 to make up for any fluctuations.
This week we received a lot of great fruits and veggies. This is the haul:
2 bunches celery
1 bag of carrots
6 oranges
10 limes
5 bananas
12 med-large red potatoes
5 small yellow onions
3 medium avocados
4 nectarines
1 bag of red grapes
1 bunch of spinach
and 1 16oz. container of kiwiberries
These are kiwiberries. Ok, so when she first sent us the list I thought she was just being lazy with her typing. Oh no, so not the case. I had never heard of a kiwiberry, I mean have you? I was intrigued, even excited to try them. Not sure why they are called a berry, they are more like a cross between a kiwi and a grape. So far everyone that tried them has liked them. They are super cool and cute - a grape that is a teeny kiwi inside. You just take off the stem and pop it right into your mouth, so good. Try one if you ever get the chance.
